There is no question that parenting can be difficult, even in the best of times. Parents must not only provide food, shelter, and comfort to the children under their care, but also try to raise them to be responsible, conscientious adults. While most individuals thrive when it comes to the arena of parenthood, many others fail—and do so in the most unreal ways imaginable. The stories below highlight some of the most terrible parenting stories that have come out in the media over the past few years.
One of the worst parenting stories currently making the rounds emerged only a few weeks ago. According to Yahoo News, this story involves the case of a 10-year-old boy who called 911 to report his father was speeding, drunk driving, and was suspected to have consumed marijuana while operating the motor vehicle. The boy was so frightened that he told authorities that he was thinking about jumping out of the moving automobile while it was in operation. While the father of the young boy did end up causing a serious motor vehicle accident, no lives were lost as a result of the incident.
Driving while intoxicated—with young children in the back of the car—is obvious a serious crime which should not be taken lightly. However, it is just the tip of the iceberg in regards to some of the worst parenting stories in the past several years. In fact, 2009, saw the robbery of a Wendy’s restaurant by a mother of a three-year-old daughter, who left the girl in the vehicle at the time of the crime. After robbing the restaurant, the woman led cops on a high-speed chase, and was smoking crack cocaine at the time of her arrest.
One could argue that the health and lives of all the children above had been endangered by the acts of their parents. However, it was likely even more obvious in the case of a young mother who put feces in the IV line of her daughter during treatment at an Austin, Texas hospital. Fortunately, hospital security surveillance caught the mother in the act, and the life of the child was saved. While we still do not know what prompted the woman to act in this manner, serious mental illness likely played a major role in the behavior.
If You Suspect Bad Parenting…
The stories described above are highly distressing—not only for the children, but also for the sake of the men and women involved. Obviously, these parents are highly disturbed, and require mental and emotional counseling to ensure their health and safety in the future. Individuals who witness unusual behavior by their friends, neighbors, or others in their community should be sure to alert the authorities as soon as possible to avoid potential disaster. While it can be stressful to monitor for bad parenting among members of the community, it is crucial that we all do our parts to maintain the health and safety of the future.
